20 years ago today...

20 years ago today I was just starting basic training. Funny how it seems like yesterday but then again it's been an entire life time. But now my time on active duty is getting short as my retirment date draws near I tend to be looking back at what I've done. I'm proud of my service but am looking forward to becoming a civilian. But somehow I doubt I'll ever be truly civilian. Either way it's been a fun ride.

Joseph Roeser, 1922 - 2004

The phone rang this morning and I knew something was wrong as we never get phone calls early. It was my mom and dad calling to let me know that my grandfather had just passed away. He went peacefully thank goodness. Joseph Roeser was WWII vet, a loving husband, father and my grandfather.

RIP Grandpa.

Wheel Woes For Mars Rover

A little setback, but it's amazing what technology is capable of, and even more amazing what the rovers have accomplished.

Wheel Woes For Mars Rover

When mankind does get to Mars we need to make sure we save these machines somehow as a tribute to the men and women who dream of going into space.

Real in online music price war

BBC NEWS Business - Real in online music price war

I believe the price for downloading digital songs needs to be in the .25 range before it really takes off but Real may just take a bite out of Apple with this one. Either way it's good news for consumers.

Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed

I don't know if I should laugh or be worried that this is a children's book.

A Wiccan wins one in South Carolina

The State | 08/12/2004 | A Wiccan wins one in South Carolina

Quoting the end of the story:

"While Great Falls chews on its defeat, the plaintiff Wynne seeks surcease. Her home has been vandalized nine times. Hoodlums have killed her cat and hanged its gutted body. Someone put sand in the gas tank of her truck. Townspeople have ostracized her. Even so, she comes across over the telephone as the most cheerful Witch I ever met. My acquaintance is limited, to be sure, but in this one I stand on the lady’s side."

Yeah, that sounds like the Christian and American thing to do to a fellow American.
The people in that town should be ashamed.

ABCNEWS.com : Digital Cameras May Delete History

Months ago I made a decision to keep all the photos I take with my digital camera for many of the reasons mentioned in this article. They are snapshots in time that would be lost forever just because I didn't like them at the moment. How many of us have enjoyed the memories of looking at goofy photos taken years ago. The memories all flood back. Just because it's easy to delete them doesn't mean we should. It's part of our life, good and bad.

CNN.com - Source: Keyes will challenge Obama - Aug 6, 2004

Republican standards:

Hillary does this in New York: Bad Thing.
Keyes does this in Illinois: It's Ok.

Keyes on Hillary in 2000:

"I deeply resent the destruction of federalism represented by Hillary Clinton's willingness to go into a state she doesn't even live in and pretend to represent people there. So I certainly wouldn't imitate it."

And what party is talking about a candidate flip flopping? Double standards indeed.

InfoWorld: Linux startup develops David to take on Windows Goliath: August 03, 2004: By : PLATFORMS

If this is true it certainly would make moving to Linux easier for people. I stil say though that as Linux grows in popularity the more problems there will be. But competition and choices is a good thing for all of us.

TCS: Tech Central Station - The Dragon Stirs

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The cold war with Russia may be over but it's alive and well with the Chinese. The only problem is that the US doesn't want to acknowledge it. Time to wake up folks. Trouble is a stirring.

BBC NEWS | Politics | ID card plans 'badly thought out'

BBC NEWS | Politics | ID card plans 'badly thought out'

I still fail to see how mandatory ID cards will stop terrorists. What purpose do they serve other than for the government to keep track of your every move? Are foreign tourists going to be issued a temporary one to track them during their visits? Weren't the 9/11 hijackers foreign? Having an ID card wouldn't have stopped them.

I know this is being considered in the US also but I still have to ask why?

GOP flier: Don't trust Florida voting machines

GOP flier: Don't trust Florida voting machines

I don't live in Florida but I don't trust these machines and would definitely follow their advice if I lived in a state that uses them. There are too many questions about security and manipulation with them. But why? Some European countries are using them without incident.
